John Yates Margison - a man with 2 lives?!

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a John Yates Margison. He was born in Yorkshire in 1849, married a Mary Ellen Sharpe in 1871, had 5 children (Arthur, Martha, John Y, Rudolph and Oswald) and emigrated to Canada in 1896. The family show up on the 1901 Census of Victoria but with out John.

I also have a John Yates Margison who too was born in 1849 in Yorkshire, but ended up in San Diego (possibly via Canada) with wife, Sarah Ann Bull and 5 children (Daisy, Poppy, John B, Victor and Marjorie). He died in February 1935 in San Diego, California.
Is this the same man? Did he have 2 families?
I would love to resolve this!
Thanks
Victoria
