George Johnston Mackie was born in 1847 to Alexander Mackie and Mary Matthew at Arbuthnott, Kincardineshire, where his father was the head gardener at the time.
The only other known fact about George is that, at the age of 13, according to the 1861 census, he was an apprentice nurseryman, living with his family at Wellwood Cottage, Barnhill, Perth.
Any information would be much appreciated.
