Tom Custer, Geo. A. Custer's brother

My husband had a great-great grandmother whose sister was engaged to Tom Custer, a brother of George. Supposedly Tom Custer was killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. My husband thinks the great-great aunt never married. The "Custer ring", as the family called the engagement ring which which Tom Custer had given his financee, went down in the family for several generations. My husband remembers that his mother had it, but it now seems to have been lost or sold. I would very much like to know anything about Tom Custer and another brother or brothers who were also with George A. at the Battle. I do not know their ranks or the squads to which they were attached. Nor do I know how it came to be that so many members of the Custer family were in the Seventh Cavalry. Also, were the Custers, grandparents or great-grandparents of George and Tom, a Mohawk Valley, New York family and of Low Dutch descent?
