My great-grandfather, William Jefferson Davis, Jr., served with Troop K, 7th Cavalry, between 1888 and 1891. He was in the front lines at Wounded Knee and lost his lower right leg to an Indian bullet. I have his discharge, photos of him (post-war), copies of his pension file (from the V.A.) and his fiddle. (He died in 1945.)

I don't have expert references at hand, but I suggest that you check the design of the insignia, verify it's authenticity and the period in which that pattern was issued. (There may have been variances of the design at different times.)
