I have an ancestor that was listed as an Indian scout in his pension records. His name was William Henry Harrison Wilder enlisted in Indianapolis, IN on 8/12/1870. I believe he was in the Civil War before this. He was assigned to the 8th regiment of Cavalry, US Army.He was listed on a placque at Fort Apache, NM. The next record I have of Uncle Bill, he was assigned to Co I 4th Regiment of Cavalry and his name was listed as William H. Harrison, no Wilder to be seen on any of his papers. By dumb luck, I sent to Washington, DC for his papers and forgot to put Wilder on the paper and received a lot of info on his injuries. My grandfather signed the pension papers stating that this William was indeed William Henry Harrison. Also a cousin of my grandfather's attested to his fact. I found in his records that he was wounded on November 25, 1876 on the North Fork of Powder River in a fight with a Camp of hostile Indians. The only battle I found on that date was the Battle with Dull Knife near Kaczor WY. I then looked at the roster of the 7th Cavalry and found a William H. Harrison listed there. I don't think that was him but find it hard to believe there was two of them with the same name. There was an Indian scout wounded at the Battle of Dull Knife and was wondering if there is a list of the men there. He is such a colorful ancestor that I want to find out anything I can about him. If anyone has any information, please let me know. Thank you Capt Crooke and Capt Mackenzie were named on some of his papers.
