Right, here goes!
The Manuscript entitled "Records of the Lett Family in Ireland", privately produced [30 copies only], written by Katherine Lucy Lett of Blackrock, Dublin in 1925, records the family tree as being as follows:
Captain Thomas Lett came to Ireland in 1649 [with Oliver Cromwell] from Warwickshire. He was granted land in Co Wexford, and stayed. He had three sons.
1. His eldest son, Charles, set up home in Milehouse, Enniscorthy.
Charles had four sons. The fourth was Stephen Lett, of Duffry Gate, Enniscorthy.
2. Stephen Lett married Dulcibella Pittman, their eldest son was Thomas.
3. Thomas had five sons. His fifth son was Henry.
4. Henry had a son called Samuel.
Thus Samuel is the fifth generation down from Thomas Lett who arrived in 1849.
Presuming that Captaiun Thomas started breeding soon after his arrival in 1649, it is reasonable to assume that Samuel was born about 1750 [ 4 generations at 25 yrs each?], and would have been a mature man by 1786.
The manuscript says that Samuel moved to Liverpool, and had four children, Charles, Richard, Mary and Sarah. He then "disappears" from view.[Where did Samuel Lett sail from in 1786?]
This Samuel's father's younger brother Benjamin was the father of the first Stephen Lett to go to Canada, which fits. Further, Samuel's cousin Benjamin [another son of uncle Benjamin] married in 1779, which means that Samuel was probably the right age.
The manuscript attributes the Canadian Letts to the Milehouse/Enniscorthy branch. Other contemporary close cousins who emigrated there included John Lett, who married Cordelia Robinson in Canada in 1789.
As I said before, the old manuscripts lack accurate dates. However, people who are recorded in them undoubtedly existed, the main fault is that some relatives are missed out, or that the dates are wrong.
The starting date for the Lett Irish dynasty is confirmed as 1649, and it fits with this Samuel Lett arriving in Canada in 1786. Did he bring any family with him? Did he marry after arrival in Canada?
Hope all this helps, and takes you a little further.
