relocating in Indiana- Jennings county to Rush county

Those of us who had LETT relatives in Jennings and Jefferson counties in the early years of statehood have always wondered why they moved to Decatur, Rush, Clinton and other counties....It's a problem that only comes to those of us who descend from the "restless" branches of the family. Those of you who come from the branch that "stayed put" will probably wonder what I am even talking about!

Last week I had to make a trip to New Castle, Indiana in Henry County and I made an interesting discovery. We decided to drive up "the old road" state highway 3, which we picked up in Charlestown Indiana (Clark county).

We found ourselves driving through:
Deputy Indiana (Once part of Jefferson county, where Balaam, Isham, and Daniel Lett appeared on a tax return for 1813)

Past the turn off to Slate Indiana and along "the Commisky Pike" (where Daniel and Fielding Lett lived)

Through Paris and the turn off sign for Paris Crossing (where John H Lett and Demarcus Lett were early millers, and where Fielding Lett and Dr. Goodhue lived, and the HOPKINS as well as many other relatives of the Letts--this was 'the central area" they located early on)

To Sand Creek (where some of Isham's children lived or met their spouses)

Through Letts Indiana and Lett's Crossing, where Newton Lett's son Allen W Lett was the postmaster

To the towns in Rush county (where one of Isham Lett's sons married and lived briefly and that were mentioned as places where Balaam Lett did some business with various churches or lived briefly)
Looking at the map, it appears that Balaam's bunch began moving west through Russiaville, Kempton, toward Lafayette, IN (where several folks came from to visit Lett folks in Illinois or Kansas according to old family letters).

I "knew" all of that before the trip, but the trip drove it home for me. They weren't moving willy-nilly from here to there, they were following the paths and trails and early roadways.
