My uncle, Joseph V. Lemire, died in combat on board the USS Beatty DD-640 on November 6, 1943. He was in the boiler room when the ship was attacked by a German aircraft off the coast of Algeria and was sunk with the loss of 12 crew members. His remains were never recovered.
My mother's brothers, 4 serving during WW II, were in different branches of the military but I'm unsure if any received any military commendations.
