DEFINITION OF KUJAWA
Posted by: Vince Kujawa Date: July 08, 2001 at 02:52:04

Attention Pollocks. I can call you that because I am a Pollock too. The correct pronunciation of the name is "Koo-Yah-Vah". It is not Japanese or Hawaiian or anything else. It is POLISH. There is a region called "Kujawy" in central Poland. "Kujawa" is the singular of the plural "Kujawy". It is a regional name, HOWEVER, contrary to some other comments I've seen at this site, the name does mean something. Here is the definition, taken directly from "Polish Surnames: Origins and Meanings" by William F. Hoffman: Kujaw- < kujawa, an open, barren place; or the Kujawy region of Poland; Kujawski. My father is from Bremond, Texas. His mother was a Knapik, both Polish, and he speaks it too. Take care.
