Jack,

This family has been a difficult one for me and I have relatively little information. Part of the confusion comes from the many variant spellings of the name Kiser/Keiser/Kizer/Keyser etc., making the family hard to trace. Here’s what I do know.

John Kiser and Sarah A. Workman were married in Warren Co., IN on 12 Nov. 1856. I know nothing more about Sarah’s origins.

John Kiser is probably the son of George and Elizabeth Kiser, but I haven’t been able to establish this with any certainty. The family can be found on p. 24B of the 1850 census for Warren Co. George and Elizabeth Kiser’s daughter Hannah married George Starry and is living nearby. George and Hannah Kiser Starry eventually migrated to Miami Co. KS as well. In 1850 John Kiser, age 24, is listed on p. 11b living with the Johnson family. His relationship to them is unknown, but he is most likely working as a hired farm hand.

By 1860 Elizabeth appears to have died and George is living with Susan Kiser – apparently a new and younger wife. John has married Sarah and can be found with his two young daughters on p. 33.

George and Elizabeth Kiser, as well as their oldest two children, John and Hannah, were all born in VA. Birthplaces for later children show that George Kiser was in IL from about 1834-1838, then moved to Indiana. In post-Civil War census records John gives the location of his birth as WV. There are a number of Kisers/Kizers/Keysers in parts of western VA and WV, that have been documented by other researchers. Many seem to descend from Charles Kiser, but I have not been able to tie my George Kiser to this line.

George Starry (s/o Nicholas Starry and h/o Hannah Kiser) is from Berkley Co. WV. He also seems to have been in Iroquois Co. IL (1863-1868) about the same time as John and Sarah Kiser. If the two families were associated prior to their arrival in Indiana, this could provide a clue to the Kiser family origins.

What do you have so far on this family...I'd love to have any additional info.

--Diane
