Kiehn Family Genealogy Forum

Looking for any information or correspondence about my ancestors in WI who came from Prussia in the 1850's. My ggrandfather was August Kiehn b.1868 Kossuth Twp., Manitowoc Co., WI who married Sophie Constance Rutz. August's parents were Frederick Kiehn and Christiana Rohrbach. Frederick was born in Prussia in 1823 and immigrated to Manitowoc about 1853. he may have married shortly after arriving in WI and the wife may have died. Christiana was born in 1842 in Wittenberg which would mean that she would have been 14 when Fred's oldest children were born. I have also found some records indication a Johanna as a mother for some of the older children. Frederick died in the early 1870's most likely in 1872 but it is disputable. I don't currently have a death date on Christiana.
in the 1850's there was a flood of immigrants mostly from Prussia to manitowoc county which went from about 2000 in 1850 to tens of thousands by 1860. Vital records are a great source from the area but weren't kept by many until the wave of immigration slowed around 1870. There are many family ties that I suspect but hvae no way of proving without these records. Another problem is the many varied spellings of Kiehn at that time. In all the pre-1900 records the name was spelled consistently a handful of times. Misspellings I have run across were : Kiehn, Keihn, Kuehn, Keuhn, Kuhn, Kiehne, Kuehne, Kiehm, Kuehm and several others that I can't recall right now.
I don't know anything about Fred before he immigrated or much before 1865 or so.
If anyone knows any information about the Manitowoc Kiehn's or needs something looked up for the Manitowoc let me know and I may be able to help.
