Kean VS Kain Spelling

I am researching my Kean ancestors who came from Ireland and went to Dundee. I can trace them back to the early 1800s. However there is a block of time from about 1867 to early 1900s the family changed the spelling of their name to Kain. They were living in Dundee and then Glasgow at the time. ALL of the birth records, death records, census and marriage registrations used "KAIN" for those years. It seemed to happen about the time my great grandfather entered the Royal Navy, was stationed in Maryhill, Scotland and then married. However, after about 1905..........everyone changed back to the "KEAN" spelling and eventually many of them immgrated to the United States. Has anyone had a similar situation? Does anyone know why this would have happened? One theory someone through out was that once you entered the UK service you needed to convert to the Church of England? ANyone know if this IS true! Perhaps they were trying to leave there Irish Catholoc roots behind. Any scholars out there with an answer? You can imagine how frustrating it was for me to try and locate them. Waiting to hear from you. Joyce
