Hi Maria
I don't know your Thomas Kane but my family are from that area of Ireland. Kane is a Shelta (Irish traveller language) word for 'House' and it is possible that many Kanes were travellers. If yours was a tin whistle player Galway Fair probably refers to a regular fair where travelling families would meet to trade. If he was a tin player he very possibly worked as a travelling entertainer and tin worker or travelled with families of tinsmiths. Under general Irish laws centuries back marriages were made at fairs and after a year the couple could come back to the fairs and divorce! This possibly still went on in the early 1800s. Either way, people - travellers and none - would often meet at fairs. That's all I know. Hope it helps. If you find anything out about your Kane or other Kanes in that part of Ireland, I'd be interested to know! For Irish Traveller information see the pages on Shelta, etc in the Scott MacFie collection at the University of Liverpool, UK, Gypsy Lore Society archives which I think is at this website address:www.sca.lib.liv.ac.uk/collections/gypsy/intro.
All the best
Nina Kane.
