Hello June,
Elizabeth's husband was James Keckley from Virginia. He also was a black man. I have researched this a little and havn't been able to figure any more about who JAMES' parents are. His mother could have been the slave or it could have been a grandmother. Either way, the only reason Elizabeth is known as a KECKLEY is because most of the slaves didn't have a last name, her husband did. She is published (and stories of her) all over the net.... none give her maiden name. She is however not a KECKLEY.
Please remember..... most of the slaves that came over to the US weren't known by their last names... A lot took their master's surname as their own to have an American name. SO I don't hold out that these guys are KECKLEY by blood, probably just took the name after arriving here in the US.
