Yours is one of those very interesting families to research because of the variety of spellings involved.

I will address only Emma's family here.

This family came from the Banat region, which had a large German population. It is now divided between Serbia and Romania, with a small part in Hungary.

Emma Schuchetka immigrated on September 21, 1912, through Philadelphia to her sister Rosalia and brother-in-law Franz Kitzinger. According to the ship list, she was born in "Klein Czemla" and her last residence was "Demes Buczin" and had an uncle Wilhelm Hack there. Neither of these are proper village names. Nor is "Kiskemloc," where you state Emma was born. But they do lead us to the answer.

Emma's sister, who immigrated in 1907 to join her husband (listed in the Ellis Island records under the name Ferenczne Kitzinger), was born in "Kis Semlak." This is a correct name. Her last residence was Versecz.

Ferencz/Franz Kitzinger immigrated just ahead of his wife in 1907. He was born in Werschetz and resided there before immigrating.

Emma and Rosalia had a brother, Andras Szuchetka, who resided in Versecz. Note the spelling variation here.

These are mixtures and mostly misspellings of German and Hungarian village names. They are, along with their present-day names and locations:

"Klein Czemla"
"Kis Kemloc"
Kleinschemlak (German)
Kis Semlak (Hungarian)
Semlacu Mic (Romanian)

"Demes Buczin"
Butin (German)
Temesbokeny (Hungarian)
Butin (Romanian)

Werschetz (German)
Versec/Versecz (Hungarian)
Vrsac (Serbian)

The villages in Romania are very close to each other while Vrsac is a little to the south, but not that far away. All of these were in the former Hungarian county of Temes.

LDS microfilmed church records are very scanty for this area. Roman Catholic records are available 1723-1830 for Versecz, and Evangelical records 1915-1943 for Kis Semlak, neither of which are likely to be of great use to you. However, there is a Banat mail list which you might want to join and which may be more helpful. See www.banaters.com/banat/MLInstructions.asp?category=ML

Good luck, Janet
