I agree with you concerning parts of the name that have been dropped off, as in van Horn...I also believe that some of them had names as in Hornbecker, or something to that effect and once they arrived on the shores, part of the name was dropped by whomever registered their name...maybe because the "whomever" didn't want to bother with a longer variation of the name...maybe the "whomever" couldn't spell it the way the name was said. Just my opinion, but anything was possible in those days of illiteracy. Just something to ponder.
