Part of the blame for the difference in spellings could probably be laid to the census takers. They made many mistakes in the spelling of last names. Also, in my own family tree, my ggg grandfather Thomas Horne's (b. 1774) name is spelled with an 'e' at the end. Records show his father Blancett Shacklett Horne spelled it with an 'e' also, but my great grandfather William Thomas Horn left the 'e' off. It followed down the future generations of his descendants as Horn. Another confusing thing in trying to trace one's ancestors is how their names are listed in various documents. As in my great grandfather's case, I tried unsuccessfully to find his death certificate. Finally turned up, with not his full name on it at all - filled in simply with name Tom Horn.
