The true ancestry of Jacob Horn b. abt 1721 who married Duschea van Atta has been in question for quite some time. Was he from old English stock; of German ancestry; actually had roots in Sweden; or some combination of all of the above? In my opinion Y-DNA testing of three or four male descendants of Jacob who have well documented paper research would be of great assistance towards solving this question. The first step would be to test at least one male descendant of each of Jacob's three documented sons; John, b. 1743; Christopher, b. 1745; and Hard(t)man, b. 1747. We believe my wife's brother (tested to 37 markers at FTDNA) is a direct male descendant of Christopher Horn, b. 1745 - what remains is for a direct male descendant of both John and Hard(t)man to be tested. Once that is accomplished the Y-DNA marker pattern of Jacob would be established and comparisons could be made immediately to all other Horn lines that have also been Y-DNA tested. Any Horns tested for Y-DNA in the future could also be readily compared as soon as their reports are posted. When/if a Horn close-match to Jacob's markers is found the correct ancestral line would be highlighted for further research and Y-DNA investigation with a comfortable assurance that the correct lineage was being pursued. Please understand that this will not necessarily be a quick process. It could be quite some time before a descendant of a Horn directly related to Jacob would be tested - but at least the initial spadework would be waiting to proceed forward when the breakthrough occurred. There is an ongoing and active Horn Y-DNA Project currently available for viewing at : www.familytreedna.com/public/Horn I would welcome any questions or comments on/off board.
