In reading your post, I am reminded that my Catherine Hartsock (d/o Conrad 1743 Hagerstown) m. John Gray AND, this family came from the York area (New Holland) and had formerly been spelled "Krey or Cray" Thanks for the info about the Indian path going betw York and Hagerstown. I'd always wondered how/why they all ended up there. Now, as to going from Fredericktown to Hagerstown (a westward movement over South Mt, abt 30 mi apart)...yes, there was the first National Rd (rt 40--still there as the old one, "Alternate 40" and the new one now called rt 40..they roughly parallel interstate 70 in that area) Now, I just have to figure out how Conrad, his dau and son-in-law Catherine and John Gray and a whole pile of these surnames (also the Heiskells) ended up in Centre Co PA.(120 mi north) btw the 1790 census and roughly 1810-ish.
