I always print out your postings in case I come across the individuals at some futurre date. I just reviewed "Early Germans of New Jersey: Their History, churches, and Genealogies. Chambers defines the boundaries of German Valley but it requires an old map to interpret. It looks like the area at the junction of the North Branch and the South Branch was included in Middle German Valley and may have been known as the Budd and Scott tract. If so Chambers writes,"This tract was divided into farms, which were leased in 1747, for a term of one hundred years. the farms, however, were passed from owner to owner, and as the rent was small, it was not regularly paid and the settlers looked upon the land as theirs in fee simple. disputes arose and the heirs of the original lessors, scattered throught the coutry, refused to resign their title. Meanwhile the land had arisen in value and was worth contending for. for fifty years or more up to the year 1844 the title to these farms was in dispute." This book is written in 1895 and there is only one Hertzog, Anthony, mentioned. And that was only that he married a local girl in the early 1800s. There was a Johannes Heinrich Schmidt that came to Somerset County about 1743. Wife is Christina. The childrens names were Christian, Martin, John, Andrew, Joseph, Isaac, Peter, Jacob, Zachariah. You probably arn't interested in the Schmidts. Did you go into that website for Peter Engle. He has a 5-6 page info page on the naming practices of Germans. VERY INTERESTING. Go to bottom of page. click on Introduction. Click on the article about how German's named their children. He has 3 patterns and some incidentals. It is calving time and I'll be back in a few weeks. Happy hunting. Notify Administrator about this message?
