The Germans migrated in groups. Like members of a church congregation. I feel there was too much conflict over land titles in NJ which was the push and Dulaney of Maryland was recruiting for Germans to come to Monocacy Manor which was the pull. See www.engle-family.org/ancestors/ancdata/immigratemd.htm and www.cityoffrederick.com/about/about.htm and http://home.frederick.com/11/history.asp?site=11 By reading these and the German Element you will see why I feel the Hertzogs traveled by land. Plus 1. they probably had oxen, horses, chickens, cattle, and household to bring plus 8 or 9 people to pay passage for. Overland would be cheaper. 2. Twenty years earlier Pieter had made transatlantic ocean. There is no reason to doubt that Pieter was subjected the thievery and extortion that everybody else was. I doubt if he would be in favor of another ship trip and its accompanying bribery. 3. There was always the change that they would find a place to settle before getting to MD. 4. He could just as well join the stream of pioneers going west on the National Road. I did read that they left huge stumps of trees in the middle of the road. Just cut them off low enough to clear the axle on the wagon. Overland travel must have been hard on pregnant women. Notify Administrator about this message?
