Hi again,

I think you are right about the confusion with the John/Johannes/Jonathan Herzogs/Hartsocks/Hartsoughs/etc. This is the case with much of the information on the family in the early 1700s.We have not yet found enough information that confirms many relationships and suppositions.

But I think that we should also understand that Mary Mae Hartsough may have had information that she didn't document for her relatives that put together her book after her death. It doesn't mean that the information should be stated as fact, but it can be kept in context to further enable the information gathering.

Many of the children of Peter and Margaret as we presently have them cannot be absolutely proven except from very sparse documentation. For instance, the only documentation of the first 8 children being the offspring of a Peter and Margaret Herzog come from the baptismal records of the First Reformed Church in Raritan (Somerville), New Jersey. I know of no other document showing their relationship. If anyone out there has one, I would very much appreciate a copy.
