Dear Abby,

May 7th great grandparents are Peter and Anna Margaretha (Kuntz) Hertzog, who settled in Somerset County, New Jersey, when they first came to the colonies. Around 1750, they moved to Frederick County, Maryland. They had 11 children, one of which was Nicholas, my 6th great grandfather, and another was named Johannes or Jonathan, my 7th great uncle.

Jonathan was born around 1753, probably in Maryland. His mother, Anna Margaretha, would have been 41 years old, and his father would have been around 50.

Jonathan married Hannah Guizebard, and I have 14 children, having been born to them. One of these was Frederick or Fridrich who was born around 1785, having been christened at the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Woodsboro, Frederick County, Maryland, on 3 January 1785.

Now comes the supposition. I have information from Terri Heslin that her ancestor was a Frederick Hartsock that married an Ally or Alice House. They moved to Allegheny County around 1817 according to Terri. They had John, who was born in Frederick County in 1813, but is shown in the census of 1880 for Flintstone, Allegheny County as a 66 year old farmer. There may also have been a Sarah born to Frederick Hartsock around 1816 and married to Samuel Wall Zimmerla(y) on 6 April 1837 in Allegheny County, according to the records of Judith Steiner. Finally, there was a Frederick, Jr. born in Allegheny County on 25 Nov 1830 of Frederick and Ally House. He married Melinda Ann or Amanda Robinette on 19 Nov 1851.

Terri is not sure this is the same Frederick, since she has that he came from Pennsylvania. Many of Peter and Anna Margaretha's children went to Pennsylvania to live either permanently or for a period of time before moving on.

Could William be another child of Frederick and have been born in Frederick County? I think that either this is a possibility or that William may have been the child of a brother or cousin of Frederick.

If you need any further information on what I have please contact me.

John
