St. Charles (Illinois) Chronicle, Dec. 28, 1939 Ill. Veteran Writes of Courtesy to Stranger Here St. Charles is proud of its Christmas decorations, but the following letter adds another type of pride, that St. Charles has people of kindly spirit, which the following letter from a veteran of Hines hospital will tell you: Edw. Hines Jr. Hospital Hines, Ill., 12/26/39 Editor of St. Charles Chronicle: Dear Sir: In passing through your city Monday, trying to visit my son who is in the School for Boys nearby, I had the good fortune to see an example of the Christmas spirit at its very best. I had visited my home town (Champaign) and was intent on seeing my boy before returning to Hines. Not knowing the time it would take or the added expense after getting to St. Charles, I was very low financially, spiritually and physically. A colored gentleman who works at a filling station (2nd St. or Ave.), on being told by me of conditions and not being able to leave his work, had a friend of his who could leave his work for a short time drive me out to the school. On being offered some of the very little money I had with me, refused and wished me a Merry Xmas, and returned to town. In the excitement of getting to see my boy and being far from well, I did not put either name down and am taking this way to thank them. Hoping that you will make known to them how very grateful I am, that I may always remember and turn to some one else if not to them such a favor if the chance ever come. I am gratefully yours, William H. Graham Hines Hospital Ward F-1 Supply Co. 365th Inf. -------- Posted as a courtesy - not related to nor researching this family.
