“WILLIAM M. BELL, the founder of this family, is the son of JOHN and BARBARA BELL, of Northumberland, England, where he was born March, 1849. In 1870 MR. BELL came to America and settled at Franklin, Venango county, Pennsylvania, where he at first engaged in the grocery business and afterwards went into the china and silverware business which he has operated successfully ever since. MR. BELL has many real estate interests, and is a director of the (pg. 560) Exchange Bank of Franklin. He married, August 12, 1878, MARY ALICE, daughter of JAMES and SARAH (GRAHAM) LADDS, of Chautauqua county, New York. Children: 1. BESSIE EDITH, born June 28, 1880; a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music; married, July 22, 1904, ARTHUR MARTIN; children: ELIZABETH and GERTRUDE. 2. MARGARET B., born January 10, 1883; a graduate of Washington Seminary; married, June 7, 1906, HARRY C. HANNA; children: HARRY C. and MARGARET. 3. STELLA BARBARA, born June 26, 1885; a graduate of Vassar College. 4. RICHARD PARKER, born September 14, 1889; a graduate of the Philadelphia Medico-Chirurgical College. 5. ERNEST GRAHAM, born August 9, 1892, died May 29, 1894. 6. CONSTANCE, born August 20, 1895; attending Vassar College. 7. HELEN KINSLEY, born January 3, 1902.

(II) JAMES (2) LADDS, the founder of this family in America, was the son of JAMES (1) LADDS, of Waterhill, England. He emigrated to America, landing in New York City, January 11, 1845, after an ocean voyage of seven weeks, and settled in Chautauqua county, New York, where he purchased one hundred acres of land and conducted a dairy farm. He married SARAH, daughter of ZACHARIAH and ANNA (HITCHCOCK) GRAHAM. Children: 1. WILLIAM G., born in December, 1841; married HATTIE SCHREIVER; children: CARRIE, MARGARET, SUSAN, CLYDE, KATIE, WILLIAM. 2. HARRIET E., born July 6, 1844; married (first) CHESTER MATSON, (second) MELVILLE C. HODGES. 3. LYDIA, born October 25,1846; married WILLIAM S. CARPENTER; children: MARY, JENNIE, MINNIE, MAUD. 4. SARAH JANE, born March 11, 1849; married J. M. LONG; children: GRACE, ALBERT, JAMES, PAUL. 5. MINERVA R., born February 5, 1851; married ADELBERT BLISS; children: ZORA, MINNIE, MYRTLE. 6. ASENATH CELINA, born October 3, 1853, died November 30, 1855. 7. MARY ALICE, of whom further.

(I)ZACHARIAH GRAHAM, the founder of this family, emigrated from Waterhill, England, to America, whither he was accomplished or followed by his children, WILLIAM, SARAH and MARY ANN. His ancestors belonged to the Scotch clan of GRAHAM, and emigrated into England during the troublous times of church in Scotland. He married ANNA HITCHCOCK. Children: 1. WILLIAM, born November 2, 1813; married and settled near Youngsville, Pennsylvania; children: MARY, married WILLIAM BROWN; ESTER, LESTER, VIOLA, DIANA. 2. MARY, born February 28, 1815. 3. SARAH, of whom further. 4. ELIZABETH, born July 6, 1817. 5. JOHN, born January 10, 1819. 6. MARIA, born June 11, 1820. 7. ELIZA, born June 9, 1821. 8. JAMES, born September 1, 1823. 9. ISAAC, born August 13, 1825. 10. JACOB, born August 14, 1825, twin with ISAAC. 11. MARY ANN, born May 1, 1828; married JOSEPH JUDE; children: ELMER, GEORGE, MAY, JOANNA.

(II) SARAH, daughter of ZACHARIAH and ANNA (HITCHCOCK) GRAHAM, was born at Waterhill, England, May 5, 1816. She accompanied or followed her father to America and married JAMES (2), son of JAMES (1) LADDS.”
