Abraham DeSart was born May 30, 1774, in the city of Leiden, (also spelled Lydan) Holland and died February 10,1856, aged 81 years. He married Magdalene Eagles (also spelled Egle) who was born in New York City May 20, 1763, and died January 7, 1852, aged 89. There has been
unconfirmed information that Magdalene was a cousin to George Washington. This rumor may or may not be true.Future generations of the DeSart families may wish to know something of their HUGUENOT ancestry. The Huguenots were a group of Protestants who were the center of political and religious quarrels in France in the 1500's and 1600's. They were followers of John Calvin and represented varied ethnic groups. In England they were called Puritans; in Scotland, Presbyterians; in Holland and Belgium, Walloon; and in France, Huguenots. The name Huguenot was given to them by the French Roman Catholics and may have come from that of Bezanson Hugues, a Swiss leader.
Mounting persecution of Protestants in France under King Louis XIV culminated in 1685 with the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. This was given by Henry IV after the Wars of Religion (1562-1598) to allow the Huguenots complete toleration and establish Protestantism in 200 towns in France. After the Edict of Nantes was revoked, as many as 400,000 Protestants fled from France to Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands. The city of Leiden Holland early became a refuge of great numbers of Huguenots. The first Huguenots who traveled from Leiden Holland to America in 1663 settled on Manhattan Island and named it "New Amsterdam", now it is called New York City. Seldom were they called Huguenots, but rather Walloon, because their church was the Church of the Walloon.
Howard and Martha DeSart traveled to Holland in 1990 to do research on the DeSart family. (Howard Douglas DeSart is the third child of Howard Myrl DeSart, who is the third child of Clarence Milton DeSart, who is the third child of David DeSart, who is the second child of Francis DeSart, who is the fifth child of Abraham DeSart.) A very nice young man there named Paul van der Laaken helped locate the following records in the book of baptisms dated 1748 to 1811 at the Pilgrim Document Center in the town of Leiden Holland. These records show that Matthieu DeSart and Ann van Sint Truyen had three sons baptized in the Walloon Church:
1. Jean Corneille DeSart, born January 22, 1773. Baptized
January 27, 1773.
Witnesses: Pierre van Noemer and Dina van Sint Truyen.
2. Abraham DeSart, born May 30, 1774. Baptized June 1, 1774.
Witnesses: Pierre van Noemer Jr. and Judith DeSart.
3. Dinandus DeSart, born August 8, 1775. Baptized August 13,
1775.
Witnesses: Pierre van Noemer and Dina van Sint Truyen.
The records were somewhat difficult to locate because they were alphabetically filed under Sart. The first part of the name sometimes appears as "De" and sometimes as "de". In the Dutch records, "de" is not part of the proper name and means "of". Howard states that he was unable to locate any birth or death records for Matthieu DeSart, Ann van Sint Truyen, or Judith DeSart but did find marriage records for Matthieu DeSart and Ann van Sint Truyen.
