I am trying to find a descendant of William J. Dews, who during the Civil War fled the South because he was a Unionist. After the war, he returned to Staunton, Virginia, where he worked on the Freedman's Bureau. He even testified in Washington, DC, about the hotbed of Confederate/secessionist sentiments in Staunton.
Is there anyone out there related to this man? He claimed to have come from Isle of Wight County, Va.
Thanks.
