This man appears on both the 1850 and 1860 census census of Itawamba County MS as Thomas M. Ford. A service file in the name T. M. Ford, Co. "I", 2nd Miss. Cavalry Reserves, gives his residence as Tippah County. He received a parole at Columbus MS, May 16, 1865.
He could have served in another Mississippi command under the name Thomas Ford. There are several to choose from. To answer your question about dying in battle, the answer is obviously no. I rather doubt he was ever exposed to hostile action as a member of this command.
