Civil War Medal of Gold

Am looking for confirmation on a medal that may have once during the Civil War been called "Medal of Gold." I have an article from Shelby County OH referencing "Mathias Elliott had been awarded the Medal of Gold for meritorious service at several battles, including Shiloh.
