Question about Medals and Musicians

Curious how could a musician during the Civil War get medals?
My great great grandfather William Henry Ford was in the Civil War and when he was buried they buried him in his uniform which is a shame I would like to have seen the Uniform. He was so proud of being in the Civil War that when he died he wanted to be buried in his uniform. I was told that he had gotten medals during the War and they were on the Uniform when they buried him.
When he was mustered in he was 15 or 16 years old they told him that he was too young to use a gun so they made him a musician.

Thanks
