Thanks for the reply, Alan.

I have copies of the enlistment papers from the National Archives. My ancestor signed those with an X, so I assume he was illiterate and probably couldn't read what he signed.

I sent for his pension records weeks ago, but they haven't been found at the Archives as of yet. Hopefully some will be found but I've about given up hope. I've already received all of the other records I requested.
