This man enlisted in Capt. Henry McBee's Co. "E", 30th Ala. Regt., Mar. 6, 1862. The War Department filed his records with those of Wylie J. Garrett of the same company and regiment. I can get copies if you're interested. G. H. Garrett was one of six Garretts who enrolled with this company. Others were David Garrett of St. Clair County; E. H. and William P. Garrett of Jacksonville, Calhoun Co., Ala.; W. H. and Wylie J. Garrett of Randolph County, Ala. G. H. Garrett appears on the 1860 census schedule living near Cross Plains in Calhoun County, Ala. After Captain McBee's resignation on Sept. 6, 1862, Samuel C. Kelly became Captain of Co. "E". I also have copies of his wartime diary kept from 1862 through 1865. As you mentioned, G. H. Garrett lost a leg due to a wound received in the Battle of Champion Hill MS. This Confederate defeat influenced the course of he war as much as Gettysburg, but has gotten far less attention from historians. Timothy B. Smith's recent book, "Battle of Champion Hill: Decisive Battle for Vicksburg" is the first comprehensive study of this action. http://www.amazon.com/CHAMPION-HILL-Decisive-Battle-Vicksburg/dp/1932714006 Here's the website for the Battle of Champion Hill -- http://www.battleofchampionhill.org/ Notify Administrator about this message?
