Let's assume you are referring to the 26th Mississippi Regiment, Surgeon James M. Taylor. He appears on the 1860 census of Tishomingo County MS as a physician, married with three children. His military records states that he was a resident of Rienzi, age 36 when enlisted and married.
Taylor surrendered with other officers and men of his regiment at Fort Donelson TN, Feb. 16, 1862. Dr. Taylor continued tending Confederate sick and wounded at Cairo IL until sent to prison at Johnson's Island OH. Having petitioned several times as a non-combatant having "no connection" to the Confederate military, Taylor eventually secured release to return to his home on condition that he remain there and not return to the army. Evidently he honored that pledge, as regimental records report him absent for the remainder of the war.
