I have a copy of some research material on the Mead family, and want to pass it on in hopes it will help someone. I DO NOT HAVE SOURCES, EXCEPT AS MENTIONED IN THE TRANSCRIPT. I believe this is part of a large collection on the Meads held by the historian or librarian in Clyde or Butler, Wayne Co, NY. Apparently this was a transcription of a collection of notes among various relatives, collected by someone studying the family. I have tried to copy the document as accurately as possible except for adding a few comments for clarification. Shirley Roemer ****** Perryville, N.Y. Aug. 4, 1902 Dear Niece Sadie, (Note: handwritten after Sadie: "Jones" [SR]) ******Tradition says that our family sprang from several Mead Brothers that came from England and settled at Horseneck, now called Greenwich Conn. My grandfather settled in the state of Vermont where Rutland now stands. my father was born there I think he had two brothers older than he. Isaac the oldest married Mary Soper, they had 16 children, they went to Penn. and afterward to Ohio, we have not heard from any of them in many years. Next was Israel, he married Clary McIntire (Note: Clariss [SR]) They had 2 children, his son Geo. Washington became an eminent Baptist Minister one of his sons C.P.Mead keeps a Business College in Syracuse. My father Levi born Aug 7, 1792 died in June 1862, had 12 children, all dead now but me. Father had one half sister Tabithy. My grandfathers name, if I remember rightly, was Levi also, he married my grandmother, Polly Preston, she had a sister that married a man by the name of Armour. They had a son by the name of Preston Armour and another Damforth. Damforth was the father of Phillip D. the great Chicago Millionair meat packer. Your loving great uncle Frances (Note: jotted beside his name wss a date, only partly legible, b 2/2/183_ [SR]) ***** (Note: at the top of this portion is a date which I believe refers to the time the following was written: Minneapolis, Minn. Dec. 31, 1893) Dear Sister Sarah, ******In regards to father and his father, of his father do not know much about them, Levi was my grandfathers name, his first wife was Polly Preston, his second was Linzely, they died in Rome, N.Y. The Grahams came from Duchess Co., N.Y. Grandfather was Simeon Graham and grandmother was Eunice Ives. When a girl they lived in Floyd, Oneida Co. N.Y. Neighbors where my dear father married Almira Graham, they eloped and were married at my uncle Zekiels, the next morning Mary Ann McDaniels (Note: handwritten beside name: Daughter of Levi, born 19 Aug 1820 [SR]) **** If you notice some discrepency in the family history it is due to the fact, that the name of great grandfather Mead could have been either Isaac or Levi, some do not remember and others say one and some the other, but Mother's cousin Fannie Buckley got into the D.A.R. by taking the name Isaac as his name and I feel that must have been his name as the records point more to that than the probability of it being Levi. However as Charles Mead wrote Mother, take either one you prefer and you get to the same place in the final roundup. Wish I could get more on the Wades, I am at them now. I am going on to the Jones family now, and will write off what I have of that side of the family. Your sister Sadie ***** |
