It is good to have you back to the forum. I've been working on the following puzzle. Who are the parents of the following teenagers? I'm going to make the working assumption that the parents believe in adult baptism and are of the Dunkard/brethern faith. The parents were probably b. <1738. >bp 27 May 1770, Engelbert Hertzog, age 20y 4m, Johannes Hertzog, age 18y 2m, Wilhelm Hertzog, age 17y 1m, Sara Hertzog, age 16y, 9m. (Sarah's age may have been mistranslated) Glade Reformed Church, Walkersville Baptisms. WMG, (July 1988) 4:112. 1. We have the possiblity that Peter and Margaret embraced the Brethern faith and did not follow infant baptism as they did with the older children. Margaret b. 1712 would still be of child bearing age. I don't have a problem with a repeat of names as the Germans sometimes started to repeat the names when they moved and left family members behind. With the Albaughs and Hufferts, both Dunkards, close by this is a real possibility. 2. We have a Daniel that was an organzing member of the Pipe Creek Brethern Church that was organized in 1758. There are 2 Daniels on the Md. 1790 census. One in Frederick and one in Washington Co. The one in Frederick would be Daniel, s/o Peter II, b. 1759 and the other is unidentified. 3. We have a George m. to Eva >b 14 Sep 1772, bp 25 Oct 1772, Sara, dau of Nicolaus and Elisabetha Herzog. Sp: George and Eva Herzog. Weiser, Rocky Hill, p. 16. 4. We have a John and a Wm possibly sons of emigrant Peter. They may be grandsons, but they may be sons. <1777 Oaths of Fidelity, Frederick County, George Hartsuck, John Hartsuck, William Hartsuck, Henry Heartsock, Nicholas Hortsook. Bettie Stirling Carothers, Maryland Oaths of Fidelity, p. 25. John is on the 1790 census with 2 boys under 16 and 2 girls. Who do you think the parents are? I'm also questioning some other info in MMH book. Questions on Nicholas, Hans Jurg's family and Engleberts's wives I'm keeping an open mind on Conrad, but the fact that emigrant Peter did not name any of his boys Conrad is a negative. Now I'm really interested in George that came to Philadelphia in 1749. Englebert had 4 boys by 1700 and he could have had more before 1709. I don't think I saved the posting about the custom of land rentals in Va. The only interest I had in VA was about the Schencks/Shanks so it must have been on that forum. Sincerely Coleen |
