Christine

I'm interested in the Brooks in and around Hamilton Co, TN primarily from the standpoint of searching for descendants and ancestors of Thomas Royal Riley Brooks (b SC 1814). I suspect him to be related to my George Brooks (b 1804 SC), either as a cousin or brother, but to date have no firm proof of that. We're hoping to find a living male Brooks who will DNA test and help to prove this connection.

Here's what I found on your Irvin H. Brooks parents and grandparents:

Social Security Death Index shows Irvin H. Brooks was born Mar 17 1903 and died July 11 1990
(Number: 414-62-7394;Issue State: Tennessee;Issue Date: 1956.)

Source Information:
Ancestry.com. Social Security Death Index [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2009. Original data: Social Security Administration. Social Security Death Index, Master File. Social Security Administration.

1930 Hamilton Co, TN census (pg 16 of 34 per Ancestry) lists Irvin H 27 (1903) w/ wife Christine L. 19 (1911) - no children. Do you know of their children?
Irvin H was b TN as was his father, mother was b GA.
Christine was b GA, her father AR, and her mother GA.

1920 Hamilton Co, TN census (pg 14 of 50 per Ancestry) Irvin H and brother Millard E. are living w/ their parents, their grandmother and uncle.
Vincent K,40 (1880) TN/TN/TN
Maudes L. 37 (1883) GA/GA/GA
Ervin H. Brooks, age 16,(1904)
Melliard E. 10 (1910).
Also, Maudes L.'s mother and brother were living with them, Margaret E. Cordell 76 (1844) GA/SC/VA
Martin E. Cordell 43 (1877) GA/GA/GA.

You say you already have the 1910 census for Irvin H and his brother Millard.

1900 Hamilton Co, TN census
V.K. appears w/ his mother Mary, 50 (1850) who is heading the household and a sister Mary 21 (1879).
V.K's father must have died earlier.

1880 Hamiliton Co, TN census(pg 11 of 19 per Ancestry:
Anderson Brooks 60 (1820) NC/NC/VA
Mary E. 30 (1850) TN/TN/TN
William M. 2
Mary F. 1
Vitruvus K.5 months (census taken June 16, 1880)

Anderson, being 30 yrs older than Mary, may have had another family before her. You could probably find them in the Hamilton Co, TN Marriage records for 1877-1878.

Irvin H.'s mother, Lulu Maude, is most likely Lula Maude Cordell. She married Vitruvus Kennedy Brooks probably just after 1900 since she and he both appear in their parents' homes respectively in 1900 and their first child is born 1904. She appears to be the daughter of Ep Cordell 32 (1848 GA) and Margaret 35 (1845 GA) Cordell.

1870 Walker Co, GA June 14, 1870 (pg 2 of 67 per Ancestry)
Epperson A. Cordell 22 (1848)
Margaret E. Cordell 25 (1845)
William J.J. Cordell 2

1880 Walker Co, GA census:
Ep and Margaret Cordell
William 12
Milly 8
Montana 6
Martin 4
Ida Lee? 1 All children b GA
Lula Maude was not born until after the 1880 census

1900 Crawfish Springs, Walker Co, GA taken June 8, 1900
(pg 9 of 30 per Ancestry listed as "Cardwell")
Ep (Ancestry listed him as Efr) Aug 1845 GA/SC/GA md 33yrs
Margaret July 1844 md 33 yrs (1867) 10 children born/5 alive
Bonnie Skipper granddaughter Sept 1890 TN/TN/GA

By 1910 Census, Ep and Margaret were living with daughter,Ida and her husband,William A. Dunwoody.

I would be very interested to further try to locate Anderson Brooks in earlier census because his son's (V.K) wife Maude Lula Cordell, was raised in Walker Co, GA. I believe we may actually find some Brooks connections there to tie Anderson to Royal Brooks.

I've taken this farther than I thought I might, but I'm out of time today. If you'd like to pursue this thru dna testing, it might help you to locate Anderson Brooks' ancestors a little quicker. DNA testing is a simple swab of the inside of the cheek. Test results do not pinpoint who one's father or grandfather was per se, but they do help you to know which of the many different Brooks groups you should be looking at and those you know do not match up genetically-speaking.

I'm in the R1a group with ties from SC to GA and TN from late 1700s forward. We haven't been able to break thru behind SC yet, but with more testing and more researchers working on the puzzle, we're more hopeful than ever.

Please let me know if you'd like more information. You can read about it at Family Tree DNA at www.ftdna.com.

Good luck, Carol
