Does anyone have any information about Edward Brooks or his family, including his wife who perhaps was previously widowed. Her name prior to marrying Edward was Mrs. Mary A. Hiner and I believe she moved from Keokuk, Iowa to Petersburg, Virginia in about 1884. I have a chest of Mary's lined with an old newspaper from Keokuk dated August 30, 1884 to support this possibility, although the census doesn't show her living there and married to Edward until 1910.

"The facts and conclusions which I have drawn:
Edward Brooks was born in Virginia around 1850, likely the son of a black mother and a white father who were also Virginians.
In 1880 he was still single, living in Petersburg and working as a carpenter.
His oldest daughter was born about 1882, so he probably bought the land (Nov 1880) and soon built the house because he was just married or planning to get married.
In 1900, he had 4 children: Nettie 18, Thomas Edward 16, Bessie 15, and Ruth 11. (These match the kids listed in the will perfectly.) He also had a 60 year old lady named Caroline Love living in the household listed as a boarder. His first wife was apparently already dead.
In 1910, he was married to Mary A (presumably Mrs. MA Hiner) and all of the children were still at home.
In 1920, it was just him and Mary, all of the kids were gone.
His 1929 will didn't leave anything to Mary, so presumably he had outlived a second wife.
Bessie married Lewis Wells. They did not have in kids in 1920 or 1930, so that's probably one line out.
I think Nettie married Everett Holmes. They had several kids.
Ruth married A Peyton Farley. Their youngest child was Edward B Farley, born in 1925.
I found Edward Brooks Farley listed as a surviving friend of a guy who died in May 2005!"
