I would like to invite viewers of the Álvarez forum with the Álvarez surname from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, or Spain to join the Álvarez DNA Surname Project at http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=P21539&special=true Project Background: The Spanish colonization of the New World, during the 16th century and later, brought individuals with the surname Álvarez throughout Latin America. Place names such as Álvarez in Mexico add to the visible evidence of how this surname has spread throughout the Americas. Individuals with this surname are also to be found through out Latin America ( with the highest concentration in Mexico) - raising the probability of how many distant cousins could be united by a DNA project such as this. This project, in its broadest sense, aims to find out just which Álvarez lines are connected and what is the genetic origin of these lines. Project Goals: The project goals are to clarify the problems that the gap in the paper trial has left the Álvarez history in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Spain. Such as: 1) Do most Álvarez’ from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, or Spain descend from a single progenitor? 2) Where there are gaps in the paper trial, hopefully sibling relationships can be made that can enable one to follow the records of a sibling that are more clear. 3) Were there name changes, are there people with the surname Álvarez that are descendant from other surnames or visa versa. Project News: We are still seeking more people with the surname Álvarez to join this DNA project and help us learn more about the mark that this surmane left in the New World - especially in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Cuba.
