I am not a relative of the above, but while researching the history of the Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee, I found this hand-written, unsigned manuscript--the envelope is postmarked January 7, 1930, McPhersonville, SC and bears a 2-cent stamp. "Samuel Craighead Caldwell was born in Rome, Georgia, the 17th of September, 1846. His father was Rev. J.M.M. Caldwell, president of Rome Female College. "Mr. Caldwell received his early education in Rome, later receiving his A.B. from Princeton University in 1869, and in 1884 the degree of PhD from Columbia University. After his graduation from Princeton, he refused a professorship at his Alma Mater to return to Rome to assist his father in educational work during the trying days of Reconstruction in the South. "He was professor of Natural Sciences in Rome Female College for many years, and was its president for five years, till 1890, when he gave himself to the work of the ministry. For some years he had been quite active in religious work, particularly in the Sunday-School work of the state. He was licensed to preach the gospel on April 9, 1891, by Savannah Presbytery. He was ordained by the Presbytery of Florida, November 8, 1891, and began his first pastorate at Tallahassee, Florida, where he served for seven and one-half years. He then became pastor at Hendersonville, NC. He then served successively Heath Springs and Liberty Hill in Bethel Presbytery, Walterboro and McPheersonville in Charleston Presbytery, and, lastly, the old church on Edisto Island., where he labored for twelve years. Because of ill health, he was obliged to retire from active service in 1918 and moved to Clinton, South Carolina. While living in Clinton, he preached occassionally and acted as librarian at the Presbyterian College in which he was greatly interested. "For many years he was chairman of Home Missions in Charleston Presbytery. Mr Caldwell died very suddenly at Clinton SC on the 8th of December, 1920. He passed away in his sleep, having, seemingly, suffered no pain. He was buried in the cemetery of Stoney Sreek Church near McPhersonville, S.C. "Mr. Caldwell was survived by five chioldren, of whom three are now living: James and Caroline Caldwell of Clinton SC, and Mrs. Carl McLean of Latta, SC." Notify Administrator about this message?
