William Dudgeon, great uncle on Caldwell side of John C. Calhoun, died soon after he came to Mudlic Creek in Newberry, SC. His widow Elizabeth Dudgeon (Thought to have been a Pitts) married John Vaughan. JOHN VAUGHAN of Newberry signed his will 2 Jan 1779 and it was proved 2 June 1788. All of the estate to his wife, Elizabeth Vaughan and she was Ex along with George Goggans. Witnesses were John Waldrop, John Motes and William Murdock. The will of his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Vaughan in Newberry was signed 27 Feb 1791 and proved 18 October 1791 stated that her children were Olleyman Dudgeon, Elizabeth Cole, William Dudgeon and shares to her grandchildren AnnToland and to James Dudgeon. Exs were Daniel Pitts and George Goggans. Olleyman Dudgeon married Sarah Pitts (This Sarah is listed in the will of Daniel Pitts, Sr. as his daughter and the wife of Olleyman Dudgeon.) Elizabeth Toland signs a receipt for the share from the estate of "my dear mother, Elizabeth Vaughan formerly widow of William Dudgeon" dated 7 October 1791. William Dudgeon, son of Mrs. Elizabeth Vaughan had a wife named Elizabeth when she signed a dower. In the will of Henry Pitts in Newberry in 1803, a daughter is named as Elizabeth Dodgen (Dudgeon). The Dudgeons and Vaughans were first cousins of John C. Calhoun's mother on the Caldwell side as stated previously.
