John and Martha E (or Mary Ellen) b 1842 are most likely from the Isle of Man. Family thinks John was a newspaperman. John and Martha and their five children came to California and were counted in the 1880 Census in Yolo County.
1. Franklin Edward Cain b. 8 Jan 1870 or 71 in DesMoines, Iowa d.1940 in San Francisco. Frank's wife reported on his death certificate that his parents were John and Mary Ellen born in IOM. (The US1880 Census says her name was Martha E and she was born in Maryland and he was born in Indiana.) A twin, he came to California at about age 10 and moved to San Francisco at about age 20. He changed his family name from Cain to Caine.
2. Frances E. Cain b. 8 Jan 1870 or 71 in DesMoines, was the other twin was alive in 1880. Family says he died a youth.
3. Emma Cain b 1873 in California married (name unknown) and lived in Marysville, CA. Had a son and a daughter named Bertha.
4. Mattie Cain b. 1876 in California married a man named Frank Holden and lived in San Francisco. They had a son named Frank Holden, Jr. GGmother Martha or was it Mary Ellen lived off and on with Mattie.
5. John F. Cain b 1878 in California married a woman named Nell (Nellie) and lived in Daly City or San Francisco. They had a daughter who married a man whose last name was interestingly also a "Cain".
