A biography/family history of Elmer L. Cain is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pgs 868 & 869.

Elmer was born, 25 Aug 1869, son of Anson and Lora (Phillips) Cain. The father, Anson, was a farmer, but became a railroad shopman at Utica, NY, and it is believed he spent the remainder of his life in that vicinity. Lora subsequently married a Mr. Miller and died at Starucca, PA. Mr. and Mrs. Cain had two children: Elmer and Minnie.

Elmer was an orphan and lived in various homes while growing up, and finally fell into the care of his maternal uncle, Joshua Phillips, an early settler of Ness County, Kansas. In 1883, Joshua brought Elmer to Kansas. Elmer attended school at Old Shoharie, Ness County, KS, during the winters and rode herd on cattle during the summer months in Kansas and later in Colorado. Elmer and his uncle separated at Las Animas, CO, the uncle going to Aspin. They lost track of each other for several years until the uncle read his nephew's marriage announcement in a Montana newspaper and came to Vandalia, MT, to visit him. Joshua Phillips became a neighbor of the Cain ranch.

Elmer went from Ness County, KS, to Texas to bring cattle to Montana, and made another trip the next year. Elmer located north of Hinsdale, MT. He worked for a year trailing cattle. In 1894, he began working for Kennedy & Broadbrook for 5 years, then began stock raising for himself on the Milk River. Mr. Cain homesteaded northwest of Saco, MT, but abandoned that at the end of seven years and settled east of Vandalia, MT, where he developed a ranch of 800 acres.

On 25 Aug 1902, Harlem, MT, Elmer married Miss Georgie L. McConnell, born in Ontario, Canada, 28 Feb 1878. She was a teacher who came to Montana from Wilmington, OH. Cain children: Elmer, Earl, Edith Margaret, Grace Belle, Bertha Louise, Fred Maxwell, Phillip Rex.

I am not related.
