My John Cain was supposedly born in North Carolina, even though I have no proof. He married an Elizabeth Sutherland who was born in Indiana (according to censuses). According to the family story, they lived in Greencastle, In. where he died. She subsequently married a cousin Garrett Sutherland Sept. 3, 1866 in Putnam Co., In. and moved to Illinois, leaving behind 2 children--Emma who stayed with a family by the name of Goodpasture (found her with them in 1870 census) and John(no indication what happened to John) He was not with the Goodpastures in the census. Elizabeth later returned to retrieve Emma. The Goodpastures refused to give her up, and according to the family story, she "stole her back", returning to Illinois. Emma remained in Il married a John Eldon Akes, had children and died in Clay County, Il. However, have found no sign of John. Found a John Cain in Laclede Co., Mo.that was born in Indiana and whose father was also John, but there are a lot of John Cains out there, so don't know. Any help would be appreciated. Big giant brick wall!!!
