Regarding James Bruce Sr born abt 1741 by some unsourced accounts: I have wondered if he was from a different mother than Margaret McMahan. I was fussing around on the internet one day and found James Bruce born abt 1718 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland married to a Margaret Wier or Weir. So I wondered if the question about where James was born in the extant family histories might be because he was born of another mother in Scotland. The ages fit. There is a record for a James Bruce born 1718 married to Margaret McMahan. http://www.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=7836&enc=1
