You might look at Bedford County, Virginia. There were both Bruce and Hawkins in the county and they married each other during this time period.

# Dec. 19, 1821; George K. Bruce & Milly Hawkins, dt William; John H. Hawkins, Surety; Married by Enoch W. Terry, Dec. 20, 1821.
# Mar. 2, 1822; John H. Hawkins & Veny Bruce, dt William; James Hawkins, Surety.

The Bruce's first appeared in Bedford County, just before the 1800's. It appears that they came from the Orange/Culpeper County, VA area.

The first Bruce's were Ambrose, Mordicia, William, and David. Some moved from Bedford County to NC, and then westward. Ambrose was found in a later census in KY or TN.
