The following is a theory about Mary Brooke, b. 1642 to Robert and Mary (Mainwaring) Brooke in Calvert County, Maryland. Is it possible (or even probable?) that she married one David Bowen in Calvert County about 1660? David Bowen (a/k/a Baughan) wrote a will in 1670 in Calvert County, Maryland. He named as co-executors Roger Brooke and John Brooke and also made John Brooke the "guardian" of Bowen's two minor sons, David and Charles. Why did he choose the Brookes? This Roger and John Brooke were likely the sons of Robert and Mary (Mainwaring) Brooke of Calvert County. Robert and Mary also had a daughter Mary, and in all my searching, I have not found anything on the Latter Day Saints, Genforum, Rootsweb, or through googling private genealogy sites, where anyone identifies a spouse for this Mary. She was reportedly born April 14, 1642 and she had another brother named Charles. These circumstances permit an inference that Mary Brooke married David Bowen about 1659 or 1660, and had three children over the course of a decade, naming one for her brother. Then, in 1670, when her husband, David Bowen, wrote his will, he made two of Mary's brothers co-executors. He also made one of them guardian (thus, the uncle was to look after the nephews, a very logical connection). I have seen some speculation that David's wife was an Elizabeth. I think this might be a confusion with the son David, who did indeed have a wife Elizabeth, mentioned in his will in 1717 (probated 1719). Does anyone have good evidence of the spouse of Mary Brooke? Or, if no spouse, evidence that she remained unmarried, or died young? Does anyone know what became of her? I believe she married David Bowen, but I would like to have evidence to back up my belief. Can anyone either offer support for or evidence against the THEORY I am proposing here? Please contact me directly at duaneaboggs@hotmail.com to exchange further information.
