Yes, Rachel,
I am the Charles who is involved in writing an 8-volume history of the Brashear/Brashears family in America. (sigh) And, yes, books are still available. The first volume was "The first 200 Years of Brashear(s) in America." I've just published vol 4 ("Brashear families of the Ohio Valley"). I hope to have vol 5 out in another couple of months.

I wish I had more of a handle on the Brasseurs who immigrated to VA c1635. I think they came from the south of France, but have no direct documents. In his naturalization papers in 1662, Benois is called a "subject of the Crown of France" and he lived in a Huguenot "colony" in Maryland. There is a christening in Marseille in 1595 for a Benois Brasseur, fils de Robert. No Church nor parish mentioned in the record I have. Those two are just a generation too early to be the Robert and Benois who came to VA c1635. Robert Brasseur renewed a note for a land purchase on June 1, 1636.

My scenario (guess) of how things went is this: Robert Brasseur was a fairly prominent Huguenot (he managed to transport himself, wife?, and seven children all at once). In one record in VA, he is referred to as Rev. Robert Brasseur. After Richelieu's massacre of the Huguenots at Rochelle in 1628, I think Robert saw the handwriting on the wall and expected the Cardinal to show up in Bouches-du-Rhone pretty soon. So Robert got his family out of there in 1629. If my guess is correct, Robert was correct: Cardinal Richelieu invaded Bouches-du-Rhone in 1632, killing every Huguenot he could catch--and he caught a bunch. About a dozen of the earliest (and sketchiest) of accounts of the family mention 1629 as a watershed year: that is, something happened before or after 1629 (For instance, Benois was born before 1629). Robert is reported to have gotten his family to Isle of Thanet, Kent Co, England, but I've never seen a document to support this idea (and believe me, I've looked). At any rate, Robert then showed up in VA in time enough to borrow money and have the note come due by 1 June 1636.

Cheers,
Charles Brashear
