Brasseur Christening in 1595

Hi all,

In the 1988 IGI of France, there is a Benois Brasseur, christened 1595, at Marseille, Bouches Du Rhone, (no church or parrish given in the record I've seen), and he is listed as a son of Robert Brasseur. (#C802985/0475; supposedly this is an "extracted" record, so should be trustworthy.)

Can anyone explain this? Or give me more information?

The record looks to me just a generation too early to be our Robert Brasseur who arrived in VA c1635 and died in Nansemond Co, VA, in 1667. The Robert in the record would have to be an adult, say 20-25 years old, to be christening a son. That means he was born c1570-75 or before. Our Robert who dies in VA in 1667 was not approaching a hundred years old. And, since our Benois probably married about 1645 and had his first child in 1646, I'm guessing that he was born about 1620.

Now, in America, this family named the first son for the grandfather and one of the other sons for the father. So Robert (of VA) named his first son, Benois, and Benois named his first son Robert, and that Robert (Robert III) named his first son Benjamin (as Benois had permuted to in America), and so on. That would make is possible that the Benois, christened in 1595, was a brother to our Robert (of VA) who was born, possibly, about 1598, as near as we can guess. Then, was their father Robert Brasseur, b. c1570-75?

Does anyone have any documents (or even hearsay evidence) on these early Brasseur folk?

Cheers,
Charles Brashear
