Hi, You're on the right track. Amanda F. Brashear was listed on a piece of paper which was inserted into the Nacy Brashears Bible (i.e. Ignatius "Nacy" Brashear, of Prince George's Co, MD and Jefferson Co, KY). Amanda was a sister of Mortimer Brashears. I think, however, the Nancy Cummins you have was NOT in this line, but in a different one (the William Brashear & Anne Ray line); I have no record of a first marriage for Joseph and the Nacy Brashear Bible was pretty complete. Here is a snippit from vol 8, which is still in the making: From 1896 to 1908, Mortimer's son, Napoleon B. Brashears, tried (fraudulently) to get himself and his family enrolled as Choctaw Indians, claiming that Mortimer's father was Joseph Brashears, and his grandfather was Zadock Brashears Jr, one of the Choctaw Brashears of Suk En Atcha Creek, Sumter Co, AL. (see hearings before the Dawes Commission: "Napoleon B. Brashears, et al," below). Family tradition has it that Mortimer was born near Lexington, KY. The family Bible of Nacy Brashear shows that he was a son of Joseph Brashear (Mortimer added the “s” to the surname), b. 9 Dec 1778 (Back #149), son of Ignatius “Nacy” Brashears Sr; that is, Joseph was a brother of Dr. Walter Brashear, the famous surgeon. REV. JOSEPH BRASHEAR and ELIZABETH NOBLE Napoleon was right that a Joseph Brashear was his grandfather, but dead wrong that his great-grandfather was Zadock: "Rev. Joseph Brashears was an early day preacher of the Methodist faith in Miller County." (Judge Jenkins, History of Miller Co, MO, p.141). "In the early thirties, the ... Methodists sent Reverend Brashears to Pleasant Mount" (Jenkins, p.254). Some maps show the place as Mount Pleasant, Miller Co, MO. "The Methodist were early active in the area (Pleasant Mount, Miller Co, MO) with Rev. Brashears preaching to the inhabitants in 1833" (Jenkins, p.261). "Flavilla Melcena Brashears, daughter of Reverend Joseph Brashears, married John Chrisman" (Jenkins, p.141). Flavilla is identified as a daughter of Joseph Brashear, s/o Ignatius “Nacy” Brashear Sr, in the Bible records of “Nacy” Brashear, passed on to Joseph Brashear and to Mortimer’s brother, Levi L. Brashear. On 23 Oct 1830, Rev. Joseph Brashears performed the marriage of Anastasia Cowan and William Vineyard in Osage (present-day Gasconade) Co, MO. 711. Joseph Brashear, (Back #149, s/o Ignatius “Nacy” Brashear Sr and Frances Permelia Catheral), b. 9 Dec 1778, d. 30 Oct 1845, MO; m. Elizabeth Noble, b. ?, d. 18 Sep 1822, four days after birth of her last child (data from Bible of Ignatius “Nacy” Brashears Sr, and “notations of Cousin Victoria” (inserts in that Bible), in possession (1997) of Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Gabrielson) Gottlieb, a descendant of Mary Margaret (Brashear) Stevens, sister of Dr. John A. Brashear, the Pittsburg Astronomer. Elizabeth Noble was d/o James Noble. In the Nacy Brashear Bible, an insert by Cousin Victoria says “James Noble fought in Revolutionary War--caught Genl Wayne in his arms as the gen’l fell to his death. His daughter, Elizabeth married Joseph Brashear. “Isaac Howir, while in War of Revolution, made the cane and presented it to James Noble.” (apparently referring to “mamma’s cane” of another note: James Noble, b. about 1759, cane was made for him by Isaac Howir; James Noble died in Randolf Co-Huntsville. Initials on top of cane: “I.H. to J.N.”--Isaac Howir to James Noble.) Cousin Victoria is Victoria Brashear Hoyt (Mrs. Daniel Craig), gd/o Levi L. Brashear, s/o Joseph Brashear and Elizabeth Noble.) Victoria and Daniel Craig hosted Dr. John A. Brashear when he visited Pasadena in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. In John A. Brashear’s autobiog- raphy, A Man Who Loved the Stars, there is a photo of dignitaries at this exposition; second from left is Daniel Craig. Thanks to Al Caldwell, P.O.
