Hello listers, Recently I have been working with Douglas Richardson on researching a possible marriage between Ralph (Ralf) Bloet of Silchester, Hants, Lackham, Hilmarten, Althorp and various other smaller holdings in Wilts, as well as holding the honour of Strigoil (castle) for a succession of de Clare and Marshal tenants in cheif and Isable the widow of Gilbert fitz Gilbert de Clare (1st Strongbow). While researching the Bloets, I read Dr. David Crouch's book on William Marshal...where in he give a detailed listing of the Bloets at that time. As a primary source in his research Dr. Crouch gives a ancient charter granting land by one William Bloet, who names himself as the brother of a earl Richard. The full quote for the grant is PRO E 327/298, and the summary for the grant is as follows " Willm bloet frater comitis Ricardi" at the time this was made, the only "comitis Ricardi"(earl Richard in english) was Richard de Clare, who was the earl of Pembroke or more famously known as Strongbow. "frater" in latin mean brother, therefore William Bloet is naming himself the brother of Earl Richard... If this grant is accurate, this would mean that Ralph Bloet, the son or possible the grandson of the domesday tenant was the step father of Earl Richard de Clare, possibly as the second husband of Isable/Elizabeth de Beaumont, the daughter of Robert de Bellomon/Beaumont, the fist earl of Liecester. The research continues to locate Isable de Beaumont granting or mentioning a Bloet in respect to kinship, if anyone has any primary evidence to further this search along...it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Karen Repko Notify Administrator about this message?
